About Mormon Temples Articles

Temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (which church is frequently misnamed the “Mormon Church”) are one of the important elements in God’s Plan of Salvation. They are so important that there are forms of sacred worship that can only done in the temple. Temples are considered the most holy place on earth, and only the home can be compared to them in sanctity. Temples are a holy sanctuary where the Spirit of the Lord can be strongly felt—for they are literally the House of the Lord.
There are many examples in the scriptures that describe temples’ significance. For example, during their wanderings and travels in the wilderness, the Israelites, under the leadership of Moses and under the direction of God, built a portable temple known as the Tabernacle. God Himself gave them details on what standards His holy sanctuary should meet, including its materials and design. “And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among... Of all the ceremonies or ordinances that members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (sometimes known as Mormons or Latter-Day Saints) perform in holy temples, temple marriage is a primary goal. A Temple wedding is strongly recommended by church leaders, so that even in their childhood Mormons are taught to look forward for this great event. Most children are taught to sing “I want to see the Temple, I’m going there someday…” and at the end of the hymn they sing “…this is my sacred duty.” To them being married in the Temple is the beginning of an eternal family unit, hence they strive to prepare every aspect of their lives to achieve this goal. Preparation includes learning and living the doctrines of the gospel, and remaining pure and chaste.
Each Mormon temple has a bride’s room and a place where the groom goes to get ready to enter the sealing room. The bride’s room is a lovely large dressing room. Female temple... Read the rest of this article »

Humans naturally feel happy when they receive gifts. God knows this perfectly, and as our Father in Heaven He always gives His children special gifts to make them happy. Life on the earth is one of the greatest of those gifts. But the greatest gift man could receive from God is the opportunity to go back to His presence and receive eternal life and exaltation (Doctrine and Covenants 14:7).
Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church) believe that the principles of faith, good works, and the grace of God are all essential for the salvation of man. Salvation to a realm in heaven will be realized by most who live on this earth. However, in order for a person to receive eternal life, or life in the presence of God, or exaltation to the Celestial Kingdom, the highest realm of heaven, a person needs to receive a special gift that will entitle him to receive all the promised blessings from God. Mormons call this gift the “endowment.”

In a clandestine dialogue between Jesus Christ and Nicodemus, the Savior told the Jewish leader, “Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” (See John 3:5.) This was one of the most profound sermons delivered by the Savior during his ministry. Also, this same sermon makes plain the significance of being baptized or being born again as a prerequisite for the salvation of man.
Baptism is Essential for Salvation
Baptism is one of the oldest religious rdinances practiced by man. While some religious organizations contend that it was not performed until the ministry of John the Baptist, members of the Mormon Church believe that this ordinance was revealed by God to Adam, the first man, who was baptized by the Spirit of the Lord (Pearl of Great Price – Moses 6:51-68). Apparently, Adam taught this ordinance to his children and it was practiced by subsequent generations in the Church of Jesus Christ.... Read the rest of this article »

A Mormon Temple Open House is a period of time when a newly finished temple building from its construction or from its renovation, is opened for public tours. The Mormons welcome everyone to see the interior of the temple, regardless of what faiths the spectators may come from. Before the tour, the visitors are grouped in the reception area and then taken to a room where they are given a brief insight and orientation to explain what is inside the Temple. They are also informed of the guidelines (such as no loud talking and no foul language, etc.) inside the temple while the tour is going on. The Mormons believe that their temple is The House of the Lord; therefore, to them it is the holiest place on earth, and this is why they expect that the temple be given such great respect by their visitors.

Mormon temples are beautiful edifices with peaceful gardens and walkways and lights meant to enhance the message that these are houses of God. Many people have seen at least one of these beautiful palace-like structures near to where they live, or during their travels. Some might have even attended a temple open-house, staged right after a temple’s completion and been amazed by its beautiful decor and the peace they feel inside. They may have wondered about the purpose of the building, or even have thought,”Why do these mormons spend so much time, effort, and resources to create this”?

A temple is literally a house of the Lord. It is a place especially dedicated for the Lord to come, and where his peace and love can be felt. Temples are buildings used for personal revelation, contemplation, and higher ordinances. Mormon churches and meeting houses are also dedicated as places of worship, where members and non-member friends... Read the rest of this article »

The Mormon Temple is a very holy place, and the things that are taught inside are held very dear to the hearts of the people who enter. As such, most people are unwilling to discuss what happens inside the temple, not even with other Mormons who also attend the temple. This isn’t because anything is particularly strange or secret, but rather because they are important and sacred. Most members of the Mormon Church don’t know exactly which things would be alright to discuss and which would not. As such, many enemies of the church use this silence to create myths and fraudulent stories about what goes on inside.
It is for this reason that this site has gone into such detail as to what is done in temples. We have been careful to keep the promises we have made to God by not going over the actual ceremonies, but we have tried our best to explain exactly what is done in temples and the purpose of each of the ceremonies as they help the living and those who have passed away.

The Holy Temple
When members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are asked what they think the mission of the Mormon Church is, perhaps the most frequent answer is “Bringing all unto Christ and perfecting the Saints.” To fully understand this goal, one must remember that in the LDS Church all of the members are referred to as “saints.” In other words, one purpose of the LDS church is to help its members in their quest to follow the perfect example set by Jesus Christ.
So how do Mormon temples help in this mission? There are two important answers. The first is on a personal level, in that temples are places set apart from the world allowing increased influence of the Holy Ghost. Only members of the Mormon Church who are keeping certain minimum standards of conduct and have a strong faith in Jesus Christ are allowed to enter the temple. While this may be disappointing to some, both inside and outside of the Church, it serves an important purpose. Each of us is entitled... Read the rest of this article »

Why Those who have Passed On Need us
One major purpose of Mormon temples has to do with those who have died and left this world. After we die, we are not immediately resurrected. The day will come when all men will stand before the throne of God to be judged of their sins, but before that day, there is much to do.
To fully understand this function of temples, one must realize that it is only in and through the name of Jesus Christ that man can be saved. “There shall be no other name given nor any other way nor means whereby salvation can come unto the children of men, only in and through the name of Christ, the Lord Omnipotent.” (Book of Mormon, Mosiah 3:17). That being said, there are billions of people who have lived on this earth without ever hearing the name of Christ, or coming to understand the sacrifice he made for them. Would God be just in condemning them for not believing in someone of whom they had never heard? And yet, without faith in Christ, they cannot be saved.
